A government chief sustainability officer for Singapore
Singapore is more and more becoming a point of reference for sustainability and the government of Singapore attaches a great importance to sustainability, therefore, many different agencies and organizations are involved in sustainability related matters. In Singapore, many large companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations have already Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) or similar positions. Some examples include Sembcorp Industries, Keppel Corporation, the National Environment Agency, the Building and Construction Authority.
Starting from January 2023, Lim Tuang Liang will be appointed Singapore’s first government CSO. Lim will oversee Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment’s Public Sector Sustainability Office and Sustainability Partnerships Office, where he will work with public sector agencies to develop and coordinate strategies for GreenGov.SG. According to MSE, he will also work closely with the government’s stakeholders, including businesses, civil society partners and individuals. Lim will lead national sustainability efforts such as the Singapore Green Plan 2030. The 10-year plan, launched last year, charts Singapore’s longer-term green targets, and has been described as a “whole-of-nation” movement to advance the nation’s agenda on sustainable development. The plans key targets are - Plant 1 million more trees
- Quadruple solar energy deployment by 2025
- Reduce the waste sent to landfill by 30% by 2030
- At least 20% of schools to be carbon neutral by 2030
- All newly registered cars to be cleaner-energy models from 2030
