SINGAPORE: AMAZON EXPANDES CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE
The Amazon Web Services (AWS) has invested an additional S$12 billion, on top of the existing S$11.5 billion invested through 2023, to expand their cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore. This expansion is projected to take place over four years, aimed at meeting increasing customer demands for cloud technology and services.
Cloud computing providers, like AWS, provide the foundational digital infrastructure for organizations, giving them access to digital resources and advanced capabilities like AI.
They play an important role in Singapore’s economic growth, growing the digital economy and the local workforce. In 2022, the digital economy accounted for about 17% of Singapore’s nominal GDP. In 2024, there were 210,000 tech professionals, a 4.7% increase over the last five years. This latest investment is expected to contribute $23.7 billion to Singapore’s GDP and create more than 12,300 jobs through 2028, within AWS and companies that use its business.
AWS has also started a new flagship program, AWS AI Spring for Singapore, to support the nation’s AI strategy goals, where it would upskill the workforce and introduce AI and data analytics across healthcare systems.
