The green side of the MICE industry in Singapore
Singapore will be the next destination of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the event promoting global standards for sustainable tourism, to be held in November 2024. For the country this is a further step to strengthen its "green" role on the international scene; only in 2022, in fact, Singapore hosted at least 6 events related to sustainability.
But that’s not all: last 1 December 2022 the Tourism Board (STB) and the Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers (SACEOS) released a roadmap that aims to make Singapore the most sustainable MICE - meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions - destination of Asia Pacific by 2030.
The roadmap foresees 3 goals, including the development of sustainability standards by 2023, obtaining an internationally and/or nationally recognized sustainability certification by 2025 and reducing waste and carbon emissions by 2023, in line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030. As stated by Edward Koh, Executive Director of the Singapore Tourism Board, event managers and business travellers are increasingly concerned about the environment, and this is why the MICE industry in Singapore will work to meet the growing demand for responsible business trips.
