Amazon Fresh Singapore embraces recycling
Singapore is the first country in Asia to introduce the new storage system for Amazon Fresh shipments. Normally, food and drinks ordered were kept fresh by packages of cooling gel, certainly reusable but impossible to differentiate. Amazon Fresh has therefore replaced the gel with PET bottles of frozen water, which can be properly disposed in plastic bins after their use. The introduction of plastic bottles is the result of several tests that have considered the climate conditions of Singapore, where heat and humidity put a strain on the integrity of the products.
The context of the initiative is "The Climate Pledge", a program in which Amazon is committed to becoming zero-carbon by 2040. However, the passage (or return) to plastic has been considered by many an action of greenwashing. As reported by Packaginginsights, Greenpeace Southeast Asia stressed that the only real solution is the significant reduction of single-use plastic, because a recyclable object does not mean fully recycled.
The road to full sustainability is still a long way to go, but thanks to the growing demand for recyclable products on the Island, Amazon has been able to take a further step in innovation.
