The innovative technologies
Our work started from very precise limitations, first and foremost the weight: this type of equipment is carried together with others and the total of the weights must be acceptable for the climber. The design of the piece therefore needed to reduce the weight as much as possible while being careful not to weaken the structural areas and those under most stress during use. The construction of a few prototypes during the study stage allowed the Salewa experts to test them and identify the critical points: this step-by-step approach led to an optimisation of the design, the form being frozen (the term is appropriate in this case) only when the last reports were received.
The punching and bending technology that was used also enabled us to obtain in a single piece: the front caps, which cut into the wall and act as support for the climber s body; the gripping point with the ground; the regulation in length for adapting to different sizes of boots.
This work of research and optimisation accomplished in close contact with Salewa group technicians and testers has already borne fruit, winning a design award and gaining the confidence of various mountaineering schools and Alpine guides.
